KUTNÁ HORA
Czech Republic
Silver, Secrets & One of Europe’s Most Extraordinary Churches

Travel back to the Middle Ages and discover the city whose silver helped finance the Kingdom of Bohemia.

Magnificent Gothic architecture, medieval fortunes, royal coins — and a remarkable church decorated with the remains of thousands of people.
[ A PERSONAL INVITATION ]
A medieval city built on silver — with a much darker side.
After rich deposits of silver were discovered here, Kutná Hora became one of medieval Europe’s great mining centers. Money, workers, merchants and royal attention poured into the city.
Beautiful, fascinating, slightly macabre — and almost impossible to forget.
Coins were minted, magnificent churches were built, and Kutná Hora became wealthy enough to rival Prague itself.

But beneath this story of medieval prosperity is something much more unusual. From silver mines and royal power to Gothic cathedrals and thousands of human bones transformed into art, Kutná Hora tells the story of medieval Europe in a way few other places can.

A NOTE FROM NATALIA
Kutná Hora brings together some of the biggest themes of medieval life — money, power, faith, ambition and death.
What makes the city so fascinating is how closely these stories are connected. Silver beneath the ground created enormous wealth above it — and that wealth helped shape the extraordinary monuments we can still discover today.

Then there is Sedlec, where the story takes a completely unexpected turn.
[ THE EXPERIENCE ]
Silver beneath the earth. Extraordinary stories above it.
We’ll discover how silver transformed Kutná Hora into one of the most important cities in the medieval Kingdom of Bohemia. We’ll explore the world of miners, merchants and royal money, including the Prague Groschen — a coin that became an important medieval currency.

From this story of silver and wealth, we move into historic Kutná Hora and its magnificent Gothic architecture, including the Cathedral of St. Barbara, dedicated to the patron saint of miners. Along the way, we’ll see how closely mining, royal power and religion were connected.
Inside the extraordinary Bone Church.
At Sedlec, we’ll visit the famous Ossuary — one of the most unusual sacred interiors in Europe. The human remains of thousands of people were transformed into pyramids, decorations, a remarkable chandelier and even the Schwarzenberg family coat of arms.
Silver, royal coins & a surprising connection.
We’ll discover how fortunes were created beneath the ground and how silver helped shape the city above it. And there’s another unexpected story: the coins minted in this region lead us to the fascinating origin of a word recognized around the world today — dollar.
[ MORE THAN SIGHTSEEING ]
Money, power, faith, ambition — and death.
My hope is that you’ll leave Kutná Hora seeing how all these stories fit together — silver hidden beneath the earth, magnificent Gothic architecture rising above it, and the extraordinary Bone Church reminding us of a very different relationship with life and death.
