According to legend, Emperor Charles IV discovered its thermal waters in the 14th century. Over time, Carlsbad became one of Europe’s most fashionable meeting places — a destination for emperors and aristocrats, artists and musicians, politicians and celebrities.

People didn’t come here only to drink mineral water. They came to heal, socialize, conduct business, meet people, fall in love — and sometimes escape the rules of everyday life.

We’ll walk through the historic spa center, surrounded by elegant architecture, grand hotels and the famous Mill, Market and Hot Spring Colonnades. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to taste the mineral waters directly from the springs and discover the traditions that made Karlovy Vary famous across Europe.
We’ll also meet some of the extraordinary personalities connected with Carlsbad. Goethe, Beethoven, Peter the Great and many other famous visitors helped create its international reputation — and their stories reveal just how important the town once was as a meeting place for European society.

We’ll see the legendary Grandhotel Pupp and discover the glamorous side of Karlovy Vary’s history. Along the way, we’ll talk about Becherovka, originally created as a medicinal herbal drink, the tradition of Moser crystal, and the famous spa wafers that became part of the Carlsbad experience.
